The work is over, the show was installed and the exhibit finally happened!

There was doubt in my mind whether the kind of work I do would be accepted by the Marblehead Arts' usual attendees. In my mind, Marblehead has always been the quintisential New England town, where I imagine the decor to be traditionally Early American. It follows then, that the accepted choice of artwork would be nautical, landscape or still life, not whispy silk hangings or embroidered pieces.

However, to my surprise, everyone was very complimentary and literally gushed about the show. I was very pleased with my installation, and I think the look of the gallery had a lot to do with the reaction of the people. It wasn't at all what usual art exhibits look like in Marblehead! There was a torso, some vessels, and a table filled with more than a hundred small matchboxes, covered in art paper, and which had artists' sayings in them....these are not in the video due to the popularity of the boxes! People loved them and loved the idea of taking something home with them.

Small Works at Merrimac, MA Public Library

Another edition of "Small Works" by members of the group went up at the public library in Merrimac, Mass. today. The library is on route 110 in Merrimac past the center of town towards Haverhill. This is a variation on the previous show at the Georgetown , Mass. public library show we did in April. In addition, we were able to hang some larger format mixed media pieces , as they have some wall space and a brand new hanging system. Most work is for sale. The whole library is brand new and has great light and high ceilings!

Sculpture Award

My sculpture "Cappella Clausura" (The Cloistered Chapel) won the Sam Sargent Award for Sculpture at the 13th Annual Regional Juried Show at the Newburyport Art Association this spring. The juror was William Stover, Assistant Curator of Contemporary Art at the MFA Boston.

The titel of the hanging sculpture refers to the cloistered nuns during the Renaissance, many of whom were excellent musicians and artists. It is made of chicken wire, wire, paint and found metal objects. The shadow it casts is meant to be an integral part of the piece as it is hung on the wall.

Juror's comment:
"For me, the shape of this piece has reference to the body, a cloak or shroud to be draped over the shoulders for some ritualistic purposes, but I am also intrigued by the shadows it casts, expanding both the physical and metaphorical space the work inhabits."

Meeting Minutes – Wednesday, February 24, 2010

Present: Bettina Gellinek Turner, Linda Germain, Luba Shapiro, Michele Augeri (hosting at Georgetown Peabody Library), and Sandra Golbert

NEXT MEETING: Wednesday, March 31 at 11 am at the Georgetown Peabody Library.Everyone must bring artwork for the show and all other print materials.

We met at the Georgetown Peabody Library in Georgetown at 11am to look at the display cases and to plan the details of the upcoming show at the Library.

IMPORTANT DATES:
Wednesday, March 31 at 11 am: next MMC meeting; drop off for all work for show
Thursday, April 1: show installed (library is closed)
Friday, April 2: show is open to public
Saturday, April 10 from 11 am-12 noon: Linda Germain will give a demo at the Library
Saturday, April 10 from 6 pm -9 pm: Wine-tasting Fundraiser at the Library (cost of attendance $25 per person – no exceptions for artists; Michele will definitely be there)

Linda showed everyone the information card mock ups that Kate had created. We clarified that the purpose of this card is to be an information card for people to take away from the show with the group’s name, purpose and blog address, as well as each artist’s contact information. Sandra elected to re-format the card and send the mock-up to Kate for final production. Sandra needs each member’s name and contact information emailed to her for inclusion on the card ASAP.

Michele will send a press release to the local papers and create a flyer for the library publicizing the show. Everyone in the show is responsible for emailing their own contacts to publicize the show through emails, etc.

Bettina will create the labels used next to the artwork in the cases. They will include the artist’s name and the title of the piece. Titles need to be sent to Bettina NO LATER THAN March 24.

There will be a binder with the display cases with one sheet for each artist containing some combination of artist statement, bio, CV, and/or pictures. Each member is responsible for creating their own sheet and sending it to Luba NO LATER THAN March 24 to create the binder.

The binder will also contain a sheet detailing which media (materials and processes) were used for each piece on display. Michele will compile this. Each member is responsible to send her a list of pieces with title, materials used and any special processes used for each piece.

There was some discussion about how many pieces will fit in the cases. It was suggested that people bring more than they think might fit. That being the case, provide titles and media information for all pieces being considered for the show – we’ll delete the labels and info for anything that doesn’t fit.

(A reminder: the large case is 24 inches wide by 92 inches long. Divided by six, that gives each of us 368 square inches in that case - or roughly 24 x 15 inches. The smaller case is 21 inches wide by 44 inches long. Divided by six, that gives each of us 154 square inches in that case - or roughly 21 x 7 inches.)

Alternate Selves- call for entries

Alternate Selves is an exhibition that explores the transformative power of costume. Through theater, annual holiday celebrations (such as Halloween and Mardi Gras), and even contemporary drag shows, costumes have allowed the wearer to reveal a new identity or at times hide from their own. Artists creating wearable items or those using costume, disguise, masks, etc. as primary thematic elements in their work may apply. Marblehead Exhibit

I became a member of the Marblehead Arts Association last year and presently have four sculptures in their 'New Member Exhibit'. It runs from January 9 - 31. They did a wonderful job displaying my pieces, which is not always easy to do. I went to the reception last Sunday and heard a lot of positive feedback about my art. No wall anchors. Heavy work and work requiring special installation must be installed by the artist. Work previously exhibited in this gallery will not be accepted. Inspiring artists and groups

I came across a sketching blog by a group of friends on Whidbey Island, in Washington State. It is funny because I just the other day thought I would like to draw more and have a group to do it with. I want to draw to improve, but mostly to have fun. I don't want to judge and be judged. I want to have squiggly imperfect drawings to me good enough. I like how they have a weekly drawing session. If I were on the other side of the country I would join them.
